Mount Olympus Ski Area

Mt Olympus, run by the Windwhistle Winter Sports Club (WWSC), is one of those ski areas with an impressive reputation. The terrain is amazing, the access road an adventure, the coffee is good and it boasts the highest hot tub in NZ.

About Mt Olympus

The ski area is proudly groomer free so it’s best to keep an eye on the weather to ensure you take the correct weapons from your quiver. The rope tows are nestled within a south facing basin which ensures it receives plenty of powder days.

Getting there will take the unprepared by surprise. The road to the bottom hut is manageable in a 2WD vehicle but often requires chains. The road from the bottom hut to the ski area car park is a little sporting and a high-ground clearance 4WD with chains on board is required. If your car, or nerves aren’t up for this final leg, simply wait at the bottom hut and catch a ride with one of the regulars.

The terrain at Mt Olympus is suited to intermediate snow lovers through to the advanced. There’s a great learners area but it requires an adventurous beginner to conquer the access tow or complete the hike there. Those prepared to go for a hike or ski tour are rewarded the most as there’s plenty of terrain to explore.

Terrain and Weather Tip

Mt Olympus receives snow from south and nor’west storms. It’s also a good pick during strong nor’west days, as in the valley it might seem like you’d be blown off the mountain, but once you’re up on the ski area you’ll be surprised how sheltered it is.

Accommodation

The Top Hut at Mt Olympus combines alpine comfort and ski-in ski-out convenience. The Bottom Hut is located at the base of the valley at 1,050 metres and offers rustic, affordable, self-catered accommodation.

Top Hut Facilities and Prices
The Top Hut accommodates up to 52 guests in six bunkrooms, with all the necessary amenities — ski storage, a walk-in drying room, and the 'flashest shower and bathroom facilities you’ll find above 1,600m'. The nightly price includes dinner, bed (bring a sleeping bag), breakfast, lunch, hot tub access, and unlimited use of the dress-up box.

Non-member Adult $165/Student $140/Junior U18 $82.50.

Bottom Hut Facilites and Prices
The Bottom Hut is a Kiwi-style alpine hut accommodation with bunk beds, shower, log burner, and self-catered kitchen. It's an excellent alternative when the Top Hut is full or inaccessible. There is no lift access from the Bottom Hut.

$25 per night (bed only).

Chill Tip

If you’re staying the night don’t forget your togs (Aussies: see “cozzies”) for the hot tub.
